"What (the evangelicals) forget is that no matter what kind of self-hatred and misinformed poison they whisper into their kids’ ears, an estimated ten percent of them will grow up to be some sort of queer, and that the real question is whether they will somehow find the strength to survive and thrive and live truthfully despite what they were taught to believe about themselves."

There is a terrible pandemic of youth gay-suicide. The media does not cover every tragedy (because it is no longer au courant to do so?) but the threat taints our community like a scarlet letter on Hester Prynne’s breast. Thank merciful Xenu for storytellers like Ivan E. Coyote. Coyote’s "One in Every Crowd" is for queer literature what Dan Savage’s "It Gets Better Project" is for Youtube. This compilation of personal short stories delivers hope with a healthy dose of reality: you can’t always choose your story but you can choose the role you play within it.

Coyote’s voice is deeply touching. It comes from a solid foundation of compassion and genuine love. The quality and timbre of her writing makes apparent her ability as a live performer by leaping off the page to tug the heartstrings. As a professional anti-bullying performer, Coyote tours schools in Canada to speak to the kids that she can save. She wrote/edited this compilation in an attempt to reach the kids that she can’t. By telling the stories that have molded her life, she reveals an all important truth: even as you appear different, your reaction to being different makes you the same as everyone else. That which divides us makes us equal, hetero and homo, parent and child alike.

This is a must read for allies and everyone in the community. Fearful LGBTQ youth are known to hide in plain sight, if they can. If we hail from a State of gay-hate, we may try to hide from ourselves. Some of us were born differing so much from the perceived norm that hiding is not an option. We stick out like a thumb desperate to be sore. Fortunately, Ivan E. Coyote has made a career out of seeking out all queer kids and providing living proof that we are everywhere. Even if it isn’t safe to be yourself, you are never alone. Whether you live deep in the Yukon or on the streets of NYC, there will be a community of one or one million to welcome you.
