Change Of Heart: The Songs Of Andre Previn
Andre Previn is known throughout the classical world for his contributions as a conductor, pianist and composer (most notably, the opera version of "Streetcar Named Desire"). However, Previn has occasionally drifted into the world of jazz and pop music, whether for the stage or for the screen. This latest recording "Change of Heart: The Songs of Andre Previn," was developed with the urging of cabaret crooner, Michael Feinstein, and the result is an easy listening experience, enjoyable to the ears.
With Feinstein on vocals, David Finck on bass, and Previn himself on piano, the trio glide seamlessly through this set of thirteen songs culled from Previn’s lesser known works from a career spanning across seven decades. Highlights include two selections from "Valley of the Dolls," the cult classic that contained "Give a Little More" (originally performed by Patty Duke) and "The Easy Way," which was cut from the film. Two melodies which have had some popularity over the years are also here: "Yes" (recorded by Doris Day in 1962), and "You’re Gonna Hear From Me," from the 1965 Natalie Wood - Robert Redford film, "Inside Daisy Clover." Previn wrote "Empty Is My Room" and "Goodbye" for a musical film adaptation of "Goodbye, Mr. Chips," which was never produced, and "Just For Now" and "Little Lost Dream" for Johnny Mercer’s final stage show, a musical version of "The Good Companions," based on the book by J.B. Priestley.
A fascinating collaboration between well-respected musicians gives us this recording. Easy on the ears, and not challenging on the brain, it’s a relaxing listen, and an opportunity to further recognize the varied musical contributions of Andre Previn.
