LGBTQ nonviolence group Gays Against Guns NY issued a statement Wednesday in the wake of the shooting in Alexandria, Virginia during congressional baseball practice. Five people were injured, including GOP House Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana.

In a statement released on social media Wednesday, Gays Against Guns NY made note of the armed security around the baseball practice and asked GOP lawmakers to think about those who aren't so lucky.

The statement reads:

Conservative majority whip Steve Scalise was shot along with four others this morning during congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, VA. Republican congressmen at the scene expressed thanks that they had a security detail on hand to defend them with more guns.

Question: What about those of us who are not political elites with armed guards protecting us? How do we defend ourselves from disastrous laws that lead to gunmen bringing rifles into public spaces, with the intent to kill?

Gays Against Guns NY is an inclusive direct action group of LGBTQ people and their allies committed to nonviolently breaking the gun industry's chain of death-investors, manufacturers, the NRA and politicians who block strong gun laws.
