This beautiful oceanfront city's Pride celebration has become one of the largest in the country, attracting men from throughout Southern California and beyond. Balmy weather, a supportive city government, an active club and bar scene, healthy outdoorsy all-American men, and all those sailors make for a great Pride march through the city's main gayborhood, Hillcrest. What brings party pilgrims here from far and near (Angelenos turn I-405 into an “expressgay”), however, are the parties produced by Bill Hardt. The full weekend lineup includes the Pride Ball, Circuit Daze, The Zoo Party, and Fete Accompli. These parties take over the city's biggest rooms with the best DJs spinning to full crowds (Circuit Daze: 2,000 in attendance). But the most famous has to be The Zoo Party, which brings revelers to the world-famous San Diego Zoo, where they dance amid primates and other species. A portion of all proceeds goes to the local LGBT community, with over $460,000 having been raised.
