NEW YORK (AP) - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says he strongly disagrees with the mayors of Boston, Chicago and San Francisco over Chick-fil-A’s (chihk-fih-LAYZ’) position on gay marriage.

The fast food restaurant’s opposition to gay marriage has touched off a national furor. Gay rights groups have called for a boycott and the three mayors have said Chick-fil-A was not welcome in their cities.

The billionaire businessman-turned-politician called the three "good mayors" but disagrees with them.

Bloomberg supports same-sex marriage, but says the restaurant flap is none of "the government’s business."

New York City currently has one Chick-fil-A restaurant. Bloomberg indicated the company would have to jump through the standard bureaucratic hoops if it wanted to open another.

He said it would be "inappropriate" to consider political or religious beliefs when making such decisions.

Inappropriate to consider political beliefs when making such decisions...really? Is this really coming from a politician? If this is the case he should be running as an Independent when he was running for office!

I wonder if he would say the same thing if the remarks were against blacks?

This issue and this business has everything to do with the goverments business. All 3 cities new if they don’t let this business in they stand to make alot of money and support from the gay community and supporters. They did the right thing as far as tourism is concerned. New York is going to loose alot after this comment goes public.

Though I’m glad the three mayors put their foot down and took a stand.. it’s about diversity. I don’t agree with chic fil a but my gf and i don’t need to eat there. Everyone’s entitled to their own beliefs opinions and ideas. Whether they make sense, are ignorant, or hurtful, they have that right. Government shouldn’t say you cant be here because you believe this and not this.. that’s just as simple minded. But it does make me gleefully happy to see mayors take a stand. Makes my smile

Well Teddy, I’m African-American and a lesbian. My argument here is that I feel discrimination in any form is wrong. However, I don’t feel that the government is going to be more pro-active because an ethnic group is targeted. JC Penny and Chick fil A are allowed to use their amendments and protest as they see fit. We as a gay community, not meaning you because I have no idea what your sexual preference is, need to stick together and combat these bigoted minded people.

Maybe the stand taken by Chick-Fil-A is not the government’s business, except that the company executive first chose to make public and government business into their business and expressed opinions that state policy should comply with his religious beliefs. Clearly, the three Mayors are only responding to a stand already taken by Chick-Fil-A.
